Description of River and Camp :
Our Kamchatka Camp at the banks of the remote river Itcha has been built just recently in 2013, and the commencing fishing season for King Salmon, Keta Salmon, Silver Salmon, Leopard Rainbow, White Spotted Char, and Dolly Varden in 2014 has been outstanding.
The traditional camp is built of solid wooden cottages upon the river, with a well-equipped kitchen and a dining room, with an independent power supply, and with classic iron wood-stoves in a comfortable 2-bed or 3-bed cabin accommodation. Every morning, the native Russian staff supplies the iron stoves with firewood, before You get up, and prepares the daily fresh meals of substantial Russian cuisine at our stylish dining room.
The camp is equipped with rafts and with a local native guide for river float tours at the headwaters of the beautiful Itcha, which is a real gem among the many productive rivers on the wild Kamchatka Peninsula of East-Siberia.
Salmon, Char, and Rainbow Trout at the Itcha
The river Itcha flows from the Central Mountain Range of the peninsula to the West, across a vast National Park in the northern region of Kamchatka, and into the Sea of Ochotsk. Our fishing camp is situated just underneath the central mountain range, on the middle stretch of the river, and the rather medium-sized river flows with a swift current into tenacious pools full of fish and meanders beautifully through the hills of the north-western Coastal Range.
All 5 species of Pacific Salmon are entering the river, with our main target for King Salmon and Silver Salmon in July and in August / September. The Itcha is a perfect fly-fishing river for the Kings. The river bed is of firm gravel and freestones, making wading easy at most spots, and the salmon are shining fresh and strong from the Sea.
Besides these solid runs of Pacific Salmon, the river is well-populated by the White Spotted Char "Kuncha", who reaches more than 2 ½ feet in length, as well as the strikingly colorful Siberian Char "Dolly Varden", and the hard-fighting Leopard Rainbows are inhabiting this wilderness river permanently. Both, dry-fly fishing with mouse flies and small gurglers, and heavy terminal fishing with weighted streamers and leeches work fine for the various fish species of the wild Itcha River.
The Siberian Wilderness Fishing Experience
The National Park and Wildlife Refuge of northern Kamchatka, with the forested mountain slopes, snow-covered solitary volcanoes, and fish-rich river systems and lakes, very much remind of south-western Alaska, - but an Alaska during the pioneer times some 50 years ago ! You will not meet any other people here, while fishing in the tranquility of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and Your only companions will be the huge Brown Bears and massive Bull Moose along the river, and the distant Snow Sheep grassing high up at the mountain slopes, while You will be still enjoying the comfort and safety of our Kamchatka River Camp ...
