Description of River and Camp :
There is a land in the vast East of Mongolia, a prairie land of rolling green hills and endless seas of tall grass, a land called Manchuria. – Shining rivers are meandering across the wide open plains of lush green, like silver snakes in the sun, and large herds of elk, deer, and antelope are calmly grassing along the river banks and the slopes of the hills.
The rivers flow to the East, into large lakes and into the Amur watershed, the mighty river of South-Eastern Siberia. And these unknown and rarely fished waters are the home of the huge Eastern Taimen, a steel-blue subspecies of the Mongolian / Siberian Hucho Taimen with red tail and flosses, and with a massive grey head.
Endemic Fish Species of Eastern Mongolia
Besides this Giant Taimen, the large-growing Spotted Amur Pike is roaming these rivers, a strikingly handsome predator, and the Eastern Lenok Trout with a short snout and with big black spots, appearing very much like our Brown Trout, but big and fat from the rich river full of insects. And there are many young Taimen in the average size around 1 meter (3 feet) to be caught on a daily basis. Endemic species of Grayling, Perch, Bass, and even large Burbot are to be found in this wild Khalchyn River of Manchuria.
Our camp of native yurta-gers is erected right at the banks of the wild river, and this Taimen tour into the National Park of the Mongolian / Siberian Borders has the character of an expedition in every way. Only 4 experienced anglers can take part, and we are using refined fly-fishing and spin-fishing techniques during the day trips and extended explorations along the river by rafts, tents, and our 4-wheel-vehicle to collect us after a float tour down the river.
Native Yurta-Ger Camp in Manchuria
The base camp is well-equipped, like all of our seasonal ger camps, and the wood stove in the center of each circular ger provides cozy comfort after a hard day of fishing. Wooden cot-beds with matrasses are part of the interior, just like solid wood chairs and a long table for dining. The native girl-cook looks after the fresh and organic Mongolian meals for breakfast and dinner, whilst the driver and our colonel from the Mongolian border garrison are responsible for the daily running of the camp and the explorations along the river.
Taimen Fishing Techniques
The European fishing guide is planning the daily fishing approach according to the water conditions, and the finesse and most productive fishing technique for our sportsmen clients. We are fishing this river drainage in early spring for fantastic fly-fishing with massive hatches of large insects, or in the later fall season, when the river is usually low and clear, after the raining season in summer time. The productive fly patterns will be introduced by Your fishing guide at camp. Our fishing takes place from both banks, and mainly by deep wading. The current of the river is not fast, and the river bottom is of fine gravel and sand.
This eastern fishing expedition with the rich river and with herds of wild game roaming freely across the open grass plains and the green hills of Manchuria, vividly recall the pioneer times and the good old days of big game hunting in East Africa, and this stark experience will go with You forever...
